Making Hot Compost: How We Finally Got Our Compost Pile Heating Up
Making compost sounds simple: pile up organic material and let nature handle the rest.
In reality, getting a compost pile to really come alive takes some experimenting.
At Hideaway Homestead Ranch, we've been building our compost using materials available around the property and learning how moisture, manure, airflow, and turning affect the decomposition process.
In our newest garden and soil-building experiment, we finally got the result we'd been working toward — a hot compost pile.
After adding horse manure, turning the pile, and making sure it had enough moisture, we started seeing a noticeable increase in temperature. Now we're using a compost thermometer to track what's happening inside the pile and learn how to manage it as the material continues breaking down.

In the video, we turn and mix the pile, add moisture using rainwater collected on the property, check the internal temperature, and talk about what we're learning as we work toward producing more of our own compost for the garden.
What Is Hot Composting?
Hot composting is an active form of composting where microorganisms breaking down organic material generate enough biological activity to noticeably raise the temperature inside the pile.
An actively managed compost pile can reach roughly 130°F to 160°F. Temperature is useful because it gives you a window into how active the decomposition process is inside the pile.
For us, getting the pile hot was a useful milestone.
It meant we weren't simply collecting a pile of organic material and hoping for the best. We were beginning to see the biological process working.
Horse Manure Helped Get Our Compost Moving
One of the biggest changes we made was adding horse manure.
Our pile already contained a mixture of organic materials, but after introducing the manure, we noticed a significant increase in heat.
Manure can provide nitrogen and biological material that helps support the microorganisms responsible for decomposition. A compost pile also needs an appropriate mix of carbon-rich and nitrogen-rich materials rather than relying heavily on just one type of ingredient.
For our homestead, manure is particularly interesting because it points toward the larger system we're trying to build.
As livestock eventually becomes part of Hideaway Homestead Ranch, manure doesn't necessarily have to be viewed as waste.
Properly managed, it can become another resource that feeds compost, builds soil organic matter, and eventually returns nutrients to gardens and growing areas.
That's exactly the kind of loop we want to develop as we move further into regenerative agriculture and livestock production.
Why Turning a Compost Pile Matters
During this update, I also turned and mixed the compost pile.
Turning redistributes materials while introducing fresh oxygen into the pile. That can increase microbial activity and help the pile continue breaking down.
It also gives us an opportunity to actually inspect what's happening.
Some sections may be breaking down faster than others. Parts of the pile can become too dry, while material around the outside may not experience the same conditions as the center.
Turning mixes everything back together and gives the pile another chance to get to work.
It's essentially telling several billion microorganisms, "Everyone switch seats."
Using Rainwater to Keep the Compost Moist
Moisture is another important part of the composting process.
Microorganisms need water to remain active, but too much water can reduce oxygen inside the pile. The goal is a pile that's moist without becoming saturated.
Instead of using fresh stored water during this turning, we used rainwater collected on the property.
That's a small detail, but it fits into a much bigger philosophy we're developing around the ranch.
Rain falls on the property.
We collect it.
That water helps break down organic material.
The organic material becomes compost.
The compost improves the garden soil.
The garden produces food.
Suddenly one rainstorm has several jobs.
Those are the kinds of interconnected systems we're trying to create throughout the homestead.
Monitoring the Pile With a Compost Thermometer
One of the most useful tools in this experiment has been a compost thermometer.
Instead of guessing whether the pile is heating up, we can stick the long probe into the center and actually track the temperature.
That gives us a simple way to see how the pile responds after turning, adding manure, or adjusting moisture.

Turning Homestead Waste Into New Soil
The bigger goal isn't simply to make a hot pile.
It's to create usable compost that can improve our soil.
Finished compost adds organic matter and can improve soil structure, moisture retention, nutrient retention, and biological activity.
That's especially valuable for us because we're building gardens on land where improving the existing soil is a long-term project.
Instead of continuously buying bags of soil and hauling them onto the property, we'd rather learn how to produce more of that fertility ourselves.
Kitchen scraps, wood material, manure, old plant material, and other organic resources can gradually become something useful again.
Composting and Regenerative Agriculture
This little compost pile also represents something much larger for the future of Hideaway Homestead Ranch.
Healthy soil sits underneath almost everything we want to build.
Gardens need it.
Pastures need it.
Plants grown for livestock need it.
Future regenerative agriculture systems depend on managing organic matter and biological processes rather than simply treating soil as dirt that holds plants upright.
USDA soil-health guidance emphasizes building organic matter and improving biological and physical soil function as important components of healthier agricultural soils.
Our compost pile is obviously tiny compared with an agricultural-scale soil program, but the principles we're learning here can eventually carry into larger areas of the ranch.
Start small.
Understand the system.
Then scale what actually works.
Learning as We Build
We're still learning how to compost effectively.
We don't have a magic recipe, and we're not pretending we've mastered the process.
That's part of why we're monitoring temperature and experimenting with different materials. We want to understand what actually works under the conditions we have here on the property.
Getting the pile hot feels like a small win, but it's also another piece of the larger puzzle.
Each season we're becoming a little less dependent on bringing resources onto the property and a little better at cycling the resources we already have.
Building Soil for the Future of Hideaway Homestead Ranch
As the ranch grows, compost will likely become increasingly valuable.
Gardens are only the beginning.
As we add livestock and develop more growing areas, we'll have additional sources of organic material that can potentially be composted and returned to the land.
That creates an opportunity to connect several systems:
Livestock → manure → compost → healthier soil → plants and forage → livestock.
That's regenerative agriculture in a very practical form — finding ways for one part of the ranch to help support another.
For now, we're starting with one compost pile and one thermometer.
And finally, that pile is cooking.
